Motoko Kikkawa will present her first solo exhibition, Mado: Mou Hitotsu no Shiten (窓:もう一つの視点) Windows: The Other View - with Superpartner in July and August 2025.
Known for her intricate, organic drawings in watercolour and ink, Kikkawa has created a new series of these works on paper alongside a striking new body of large-scale works with the pastel water colours washed across intricate lace-like laser-cut aluminium profiles. These metallic forms are direct evolutions of her original drawings, translating the chance fluidity and detail of her ink and pigment works into filigree fields that float effortlessly just free of the wall.
Like much of Kikawa’s art, these works draw on multi-layered perspectives, inviting audiences to reconsider spatial, cultural, and personal viewpoints.
This exhibition follows Kikkawa’s recent Crucible Artist Residency in Ōamaru, where she spent 16 weeks immersed in the industrial heritage of the Gillies MetalTech foundry. The residency provided her with access to traditional pattern-making techniques and foundry processes, which she integrated into her evolving creative practice.
Motoko Kikkawa is a multidisciplinary artist and musician whose inventive practice spans visual and sonic realms. After relocating from Tokyo to New Zealand in 2004, she quickly immersed herself in the vibrant cultural landscape of Ōtepoti Dunedin. Her work – ranging from fine ink‐and‐watercolour drawings and ceramic sculptures to improvised violin performances – transcends traditional boundaries and transforms art into a dynamic dialogue. Embracing spontaneity and collaboration, Kikkawa draws inspiration from everyday encounters to create immersive experiences that captivate audiences. A vital presence in Ōtepoti’s art community and Aotearoa New Zealand’s contemporary scene, her innovative voice resonates with transformative energy.
