Superpartner is proud to present a special screening of Jim Speers & Tu Neill’s documentary, “Ayukawa: The Weight of a Life”, followed by a conversation and Q&A with artist and Co-Director, Jim Speers. This event coincides with the exhibition Ayukawa: Community, now available to view at our Arrowtown gallery.

Directed by Tu Neill and Jim Speers between 2017 and 2020, Ayukawa: The Weight of a Life moves through a small whaling town on Japan’s Sanriku Coast, tracing conversations and everyday scenes in the long aftermath of the 2011 tsunami. Poignant recollections from local residents, layered with meditative cinematography reveal a place where memory, culture, tradition and reconstruction quietly converge.

Following the screening, Jim Speers will join us for a discussion of the work’s genesis and the collaborative processes behind it.
